Sleep Apnea
As people live longer and gain weight, high blood pressure is a common development.
The weight gain leads to a heavier neck which affects the inner contours of the oropharynx.
That is a common development which in turn leads to obstructive sleep apnea.
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include snoring during sleep, extreme tiredness, frequent urination which interrupts sleep, and waking up tired. This condition is often treated by pulmonologists with a CPAP. A CPAP is a full face mask that people use during sleep, which is not a romantic development. Patients who are unable to use the CPAP for a variety of reasons, have an alternative solution which is MAD. MAD stands for a mandibular advancement device. It advances the mandible into a more forward position and creates a better opening to allow air in.
Patients who have OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) often stop breathing during sleep. Those episodes induce a non-restorative sleep pattern where-in the blood becomes poorly oxygenated and that is why people wake up tired. Non restorative sleep affects energy levels; hence there is daily tiredness.
I will be writing more about this subject. If you are unable to use a CPAP to control your obstructive sleep apnea there is a dental alternative. Check out our website at stanleymarkamndds.com for additional information.
