Patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea are often prescribed a CPAP (continuous passive airway pressure) to use when they sleep to enhance their breathing. It is not uncommon for patients who have this device to not use it because the sleep apnea devices are difficult to wear. A face mask is attached to a device which produces a continuous rush of air into the mouth and pharynx. Both the bulk of the face mask and the continuous rush of air are very annoying to many patients and they gradually stop using it. Such patients are referred to as being “CPAP Intolerant”. They know that it is medically necessary to use it but they cannot or will not use it.
