Intraoral devices are often used as an aid to control Jaw joint pain. They are actually called orthotics for they are used to balance the pressures on the temporomandibular joints. They look very much like a mouth guard but serve a different function. Some orthotics are made for the lower jaw while others are used for the maxillary arch. They actually come in a variety of configurations. Sometimes more than one is required. Their cost is based more on the estimated time required for the adjustments than the simple cost of materials. Adjustments are made as the jaw joints re-position themselves into a healthy, pain-free position.
