TMJ is a condition where the jaw joints develop within them a disease process resulting in pain. Other times the TMJ issue involves a dysfunction of the surrounding muscles. That is why the pain issue is sometimes referred to as TMD-temporomandibular dysfunction. Sometimes the pain is due primarily to a joint issue and other times it is due to a muscle issue. Often it is a combination of both.
When the muscles are responsible for causing pain, they can become very inflamed because some muscle fibers become overworked. Overworked muscle fibers can develop trigger points within them which, when touched or used, refer pain to other parts of the face including the temporomandibular joints. Muscle fibers develop taut bands (trigger points) which are responsible for the pain when stimulated by touch or use. They can be broken apart by inserting a needle into them which will break up the trigger point. One injection is often not sufficient and several may be required. Massage therapy is often used with this injection.
Trigger-point muscle injections provide an immediate way to relieve pain at its source, and in conjunction with supporting therapies, is an excellent treatment option. Ask Dr. Markman for a complete diagnosis and treatment plan using trigger-point muscle injections.
