Dr. Stanley Markman, is an Assistant clinical Professor in the Orofacial Pain Department of the New Jersey School of Dental Medicine associated with Rutgers University. He teaches in the Orofacial Pain Clinic where he works with graduate students who are in training, learning how to manage TMD issues and headache.
As a teacher, I instruct post-doctoral students who are either in the fellowship or master’s program, to diagnose patients who have unusual or difficult-to-diagnose oral facial pain issues, including difficult-to-resolve TMJ problems. The patients we care for are referred to the clinic because the treating/referring dentists do not know how to diagnose or treat those conditions. I also see these kinds of patients in my private practice, along with those who have sleep apnea and are unable to use a CPAP.
Before we can help a diagnosis is required. A diagnosis begins with the history of the previous professionals you have seen and what they attempted to do relieve your pain. That is followed with your chief complaint and many questions, not only about your current pain, but about your systemic health including medications you are taking. After a physical examination is completed, other imaging and blood tests may be ordered.
Dr. Markman is one of 5 orofacial pain dentists in New Jersey who is Board Certified in orofacial pain.
